Future of Lensless Smart Sensing (LSS) in IoT

Prototyping applications with new LSS technology.
During a year-long product innovation initiative, known as the Partners in Open Development (or POD) program, IXDS and Rambus worked together to design the future of sensing in the Internet of Things. 
Approach

From the IXDS studio in Berlin, a multidisciplinary group of strategists, designers, developers and engineers worked side by side with the Rambus emerging solutions engineering and user experience design teams to realize the potential of Rambus’ new Lensless Smart Sensor, or LSS.

Collaborative ideation sessions with all members of the IXDS team helped to produce a range of varied ideas, while sessions involving members of the Rambus team enabled us to better understand their needs and motivation for the project. The ideas from these sessions were sorted, categorized into market areas, and evaluated to highlight the best concepts. This stage was often challenging due to the diversity of the ideas, and required a reiterative process of filtering and re-filtering.

Developing concepts means understanding the technology that is out there. Producing storyboards and use case videos to visualize concepts helps us to see how those concepts might work in the real world. At the same time, as use cases are taking shape, our engineers are testing and tinkering, and testing again, which helps them to produce a working prototype. 

Result

By working closely with Rambus, and with experts from other relevant fields, we were able to better understand the opportunities and limitations of the LSS. From initial ideas, to future scenarios, to a working prototype, the full potential of the technology could be realized using the IXDS design process.
